Mrs. Ruebena “Lady” Spottsville Newsom of Grand Blanc, MI formerly of Shawneetown, IL died Saturday January 27, 2018 in Grand Blanc, MI. Graveside services will be held Saturday February 3, 2018 at 12 Noon at Lakeview Cemetery in Carrier Mills, IL. There will be no visitation all friends should go directly to the cemetery. Reverend Ownly Williams and Reverend Jack Hall will officiate. Felty Funeral Hom in Carrier Mills, IL is Assisting the family. She was born July 13, 1916 in Old Shawneetown, Illinois, the third of eight children of Ulysses G. and Minnie (Boone) Spottsville. “Lady” was a resident of Shawneetown, IL for 99 years. She moved to Michigan in January 2015 after a brief illness. Ruebena was married to Ivory Newsom and from this union Venson (Marilynn) and Garrison (Vera) were born. She also raised her nephew, Bobby (Barbara) Spottsville as her own son. She was affectionately called by her family and friends as “Lady” and “Madam” by her sons. All of her grandchildren lovingly called her “Grandlady”. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she was always excited about her Sunday School Class. “Lady” was a Bible Scholar and loved to read. She was an avid gardener up to her 99th birthday, she would garden, then harvest the fruit and vegetables and can them. “Lady” was well known for her seedless blackberry jam, canned tomatoes and okra. She would feed everyone who came to visit her. “Lady” loved to crochet and knit. She also loved to quote poetry. “Lady” was a great family historian. She leaves to cherish her memory: sister-in-law, Estelle Spottsville of Flint, MI; step-son, Eligah Newsome of South Bend, IN; son, Garrison (Vera) of Munster, IN; daughter-in-law, Marilynn of Grand Blanc, MI; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to express special thanks to Heart To Heart Hospice, First Baptist Church family, Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church family and her loving family who cared for her.
