Carl Eugene “Gene” Tanner, 84, of Carrier Mills, IL died Friday December 1, 2023 in Carrier Mills Nursing and Rehab Center surrounded by his loved ones. Graveside services will be held Wednesday December 6, 2023 at 11 am at Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills, IL. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 9 am until 10:30 am at Felty Funeral Home in Carrier Mills, IL. Reverend Jeff Owens and Reverend Keith Owens will officiate. He was born on February 11, 1939 in Carrier Mills, IL to the late Vern and Gladys (Blackman) Tanner. He was happily married for 58 years to the former Betty Louise Owens. They were married on November 11, 1959 and she preceded in death on February 2, 2018. Gene was a hardworking, kind, generous man who loved his family. He worked for many years at O'Keefe Motors in Carrier Mills, IL. He later became a coal miner and retired from Amax Coal Company as a warehouse manager after over two decades of service. He loved watching John Wayne movies and the Andy Griffith show. His favorite meals could be found at any fast food restaurants, especially McDonald's. He loved to go bowling and play miniature golf as well as taking walks and going fishing. He was a long standing member of New Salem Baptist Church in Carrier Mills, IL. He served as a Deacon there and served the church in multiple ways over the years. He is survived by his Daughter: Debbie Tanner of Carrier Mills, IL; Son: Steve Tanner of West Frankfort, IL; Sister: Connie Tite of Ozark, IL; 6 Grandchildren: Matthew Tanner of Carbondale, IL; Jordan Tanner of Carbondale, IL; Brandon Tanner of West Frankfort, IL; Brandi (Brett) Brachear of Carterville, IL; Jamie (Brandon) Reynolds of Harrisburg and Travis Hall of Carrier Mills, IL; 5 Great grandchildren: Callie Reynolds, Cade Reynolds, Lucas Tanner, Brynn Brachear and Tanner Brachear. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; Wife: Betty Tanner; 2 Brothers: Wayne Tanner and Larry Tanner and his Sister: Gracie Cain.
